ABOUT THE COURSE
Verbal Riddim: Contemporary Caribbean Literature
This course will examine modern and contemporary poetry and prose from the Caribbean. Focusing on a range of texts, we will explore the ways in which a history of colonialism and creolization of language and culture have impacted the literature of the region. We will critique tourist industry representations of the Caribbean, constructing a more complete picture of the political, cultural and social frameworks of these nations. Discussions will also focus on the “history of the voice” in the Caribbean, exploring the complexity of linguistic space, and what it means to claim agency via storytelling and poetry. Texts will include work by Jamaica Kincaid, Cristina Garcia, Nourbese Philip, Patrick Chamoiseau and others.
