Course Description

The Victorian Era & the 19th C. Novel

Do you ever wonder where mysteries, detective stories, and horror fiction came from? The Victorians, naturally! In this course, we’ll explore the origins of many of your favorite fiction genres in nineteenth-century novels. Readings include Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, as well as the first British detective novel, The Moonstone, one of the most popular sensation novels, Lady Audley’s Secret, and the classic horror tale, Dracula!
