PHIL 1400 Philosophy and the Sciences

Instructor Contact:

Andrew D. Chapman

About the Course:

I will present material to the class in audio lectures available on D2L under the ‘Content’ tab for our course. These lectures can be streamed online or downloaded in MP3 format. There will be a handout that goes along with each lecture. There are twenty-one lectures.

The readings are available in two PDF books located in the ‘Course Documents’ module.

Before each lecture is posted (excluding the first lecture), you will take a short reading quiz on the reading assignment that is preparatory for the related lecture and slideshow. These quizzes check your comprehension as well as ensure that you are reading. There will be twenty-seven reading quizzes.

Required Texts:

The readings are available in two PDF books located in the ‘Course Documents’ module.

You will be graded based on two criteria:

  1. Exams—There will be three exams.
    1. First Exam: worth 25% of your final grade
    2. Second Exam: worth 25% of your final grade
    3. Third Exam: worth 25% of your final grade

All exams can consist of a series of short answer questions. Specific criteria for each exam will be spelled out on the exam. Information regarding exam distribution and due dates is listed below. Exams will be distributed on D2L in the ‘Course Documents’ module. You may use lectures, readings, and notes when completing the exams.

  1. Reading Quizzes—There will be twenty reading quizzes. These quizzes are worth 25% of your final grade.

Reading quizzes will not be accepted late. You will be penalized five points (one half of a letter grade) for each day an exam is late. An exam is considered late at 12:00 AM, Midnight, of the day following the due date.

If you are unable to complete an assignment for any reason, please let me know, and we can work together to extend your deadline. If you receive an extension, you won’t be penalized for handing the work in after the original deadline.
