MUEL 2782 World Music: Africa, Europe, and the Americas

ABOUT THE COURSE:

Musical performance, composition, and exchange often lie at the core of social movements that seek to fight for human rights, expose oppression, chance societal norms, and express various forms of protest against institutions of power. This course seeks to introduce students to  world musics through active listening and discussion of the relationship between music and social protest around the world. The class requires no previous knowledge of music theory or music notation, and all necessary terminology will be explained. The goals for students include: to experience and learn about musics from various parts of the world; to analyze the relationship between music, musicians, and culture through its use in social protest and expressions of social movements.
