About the Course:

ENGL 1191-581 (Introduction to Creative Writing) is designed entirely through online (through Canvas) means. In this course, students will work individually and together to develop their own creative writing in a way that enhances their use of craft techniques across a variety of styles and genres. The writing practices and strategies students will experiment with range from person to person, but every student will be exposed to and discuss the same list of readings and writing assignments.

Objectives:

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Identify and discuss the roles of craft elements such as perspective, imagery, voice, character, form and more in each of the three core genres: fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry.
  • Identify and explain the specific uses of craft elements in reading materials within each of the three core genres (from published authors and peers alike).
  • Apply craft elements when writing original work within each of the three core genres.
  • Complete first and revised drafts (based on instructor and peer feedback) of original fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

Required Texts:

All reading materials will be provided by the instructor.

Grading (out of n points): 1000
