Online Course Format

Online term-based courses provide the dynamic experience of a traditional class with the flexibility of a web-based environment. Most of your interactions with the instructor and other students will be online through CU Boulder’s online learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L). Each online course is unique and may contain any combination of assignments including reading, writing, online quizzes, and discussion posts.

Some of our online courses are self-paced with set time limits for assignments and exams, and other courses follow set dates typical of a semester calendar as term-based courses.

Term-based Courses

Students in online term-based courses interact with instructors and fellow students asynchronously through weekly assignments, activities, and discussions. Term-based courses follow structured academic calendars and holiday schedules in full-semester, 10-week, and 7-week sessions. Courses may have unique start and end dates, drop deadlines, and refund schedules listed under dates and deadlines.

Time Commitment

You should plan to spend the same number of hours actively participating online as you would if you attended a traditional course. For example, if a course is 3 credit hours, you should expect 3 hours of online interaction per week. In addition, plan on 2 hours of course work per semester hour to account for the time it takes to complete reading and writing assignments.

Self-paced Courses

Self-paced online courses offer flexibility so you can fit course work into your schedule. Enroll any time and finish in less than a semester or up to 6 months. You take exams and finish projects when you have time to focus on them as long as it fits the course time limits and deadlines.

Time Commitment

You must allow a minimum of 2 weeks of study for each credit hour assigned. For example, 6 weeks are required for a 3 credit course. Each instructor has determined the number of assignments allowed in a time period, generally no more than 2 assignments in a 7-day period.

Accessing Online Courses

Go to Desire2Learn (D2L) and follow the instructions to access your online course. You will need to have an IdentiKey username and password to log in.

Please note: for online courses, it takes 48 hours from the time you enroll before your course will be available to you on D2L. If you enroll in a term-based course, you will have access two days before the course start date.

State Authorization

The University is authorized to offer online education to prospective students residing in any state, however some restrictions still apply. Learn more about current restrictions.

Online Composition Hub

The Online Composition Hub is a free tutoring service for Continuing Education students. Using online tools, the Online Composition Hub provides access to experienced, student tutors.

Tutors specialize in helping students with traditional papers, but they can assist with web design, video, blogging, Prezi, PowerPoint, and other projects. Professional materials, such as resumes, cover letters, applications, and research projects, are also acceptable.

Financial Aid Advising

Students enrolled in university credit courses through Continuing Education may be eligible for financial assistance. Continuing Education has a financial aid advisor to assist you in exploring all the options available to you, whether you are a degree or nondegree student.

Eligibility to Enroll in Credit Courses

You need a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma to enroll in credit courses. If you are under 22 years of age as of Sept. 15 for fall or Jan. 15 for spring and not officially admitted or enrolled in a CU Boulder degree program, you must meet criteria similar to those of freshmen entering the university. To determine your eligibility to take credit classes, you must meet (by phone or in person) with a Continuing Education academic advisor and provide copies of your high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores.

In addition, some courses at CU–including mathematics, engineering, language and all graduate-level courses–may be restricted. Proof of completed prerequisites or departmental permission may be required to enroll. Contact an academic advisor with any questions you have about the course(s) you intend to take.

Students with University of Colorado with service indicators (financial, academic, student conduct, etc.) may not be eligible to enroll. Students should contact a Continuing Education academic advisor with questions about academic probation/suspension/dismissal from the Boulder campus. More about probation and suspension.

Enrollment for Current Students

If you are currently a degree-seeking student and you have enrolled in a CU Boulder course within the past 12 months, you are automatically enabled to enroll for Continuing Education courses through MyCUInfo.colorado.edu, the CU Boulder student portal.

If you are nondegree student, you must use Self Term Activation in MyCUInfo before enrolling or contact our office to be term activated. Learn how to term activate yourself.

Enrollment for New Students

If you are new to CU and have never enrolled in credit courses, complete and submit the Online Enrollment Application for Continuing Education. You can also download the fillable Enrollment Registration PDF and fax, mail, or deliver it in person. You will receive an email confirming receipt of your application.

Note: if you already have a bachelor’s degree and intend to take undergraduate courses, you must choose “Undergraduate” as your status on the application. Otherwise you will be charged the graduate tuition rate and will not be eligible to use the College Opportunity Fund.

If approved, you will receive a student identification number to activate your Identikey and search/enroll in courses via MyCUInfo.

Enrollment for Former CU Students

Former Degree Students

If more than 12 months has passed since you enrolled in a CU Boulder course but you were previously admitted to a degree program at CU, download the fillable Enrollment Registration PDF and fax, mail, or deliver it in person. You will receive an email confirming receipt of your application.

Former Nondegree Students

If you were a nondegree student while you were previously taking courses at CU Boulder, complete and submit the Online Enrollment Application or download the fillable Enrollment Registration PDF and fax, mail, or deliver it in person. You will receive an email confirming receipt of your application.

If approved, you will receive a student identification number to activate your Identikey and search/enroll in courses via MyCUInfo.

MyCUInfo and IdentiKey

MyCUInfo is the online campus portal and an important tool. It gives you access to credit course enrollment, your CU student email account, campus announcements, semester schedule, tuition bill, book lists, clicker registration, posted assignments, your final grades, and more.

You’ll need an Identikey, or a unique username, to log in to and access MyCUInfo. An Identikey allows you to register for CU courses and provides you with access to online services and campus computing facilities. Use your student identification number to activate your IdentiKey at cuidm.colorado.edu.

Enrollment Restrictions for Self-paced Courses

Students from CU’s College of Arts and Sciences, Journalism and Mass Communication Program, and the Leeds School of Business are only allowed to be enrolled in two self-paced courses at a time. After completing one or both of your courses, you may register for more, as long as you are active in only two courses at a time. It is your responsibility to see that you are not enrolled in more than the permitted number of courses.

Add, Drop, and Withdrawal Info

Enrolled students must add or drop courses by the dates and deadlines listed in their program’s academic calendar. You may add, drop, or withdraw via MyCUInfo, at our office at 1505 University Avenue, Boulder, or by email at ceregistration@colorado.edu.

If you fail to drop by the deadline you may receive a grade of F and you may be liable for any tuition and fees. You may withdraw from a credit course after the published drop deadline. Withdrawals will result in a W on your academic record.

Self-paced Online Courses Time Limits and Deadlines

You must complete a self-paced online course within 6 months of your enrollment date.

If you need a grade posted to your transcript by graduation or another specific date, you must give your instructor sufficient time to grade your work. Plan to have all written assignments completed and the final examination completed at least 5 weeks before you need the credit on a transcript. Please remember you are not the only person taking the course. Only 1 unit of work may be submitted during a 1-week period. Permission to work faster must be secured by the supervisor from the instructor/grader.

Dropping a Self-paced Course

You may drop the course and receive a full tuition refund within 40 calendar days of registration without any mark on your transcript. You are allowed one drop/transfer to a different course within 40 calendar days. If you do not complete your course within the time limit, you must formally withdraw before the expiration date to receive a W on your transcript. If you do not withdraw before the expiration date, you will receive an F. You may submit a withdrawal request in writing or send an email to cewww@colorado.edu.

Extensions for Self-paced Courses

You will not be notified when your self-paced course is about to expire, and it is your responsibility to keep track of your course expiration date. Self-paced online courses may be extended for an additional 6 months for an extension fee of $65 per credit hour. Requests for course extensions must be received before the expiration date or within a 40-day grace period for an additional $10 course reinstatement fee. You may submit your request online, mail a written request with a check to the Continuing Education office, or call to extend your course over the phone. Only one extension is allowed.

If you register for an extension, you will be enrolled in a separate extension section of the class. You will receive a grade of “Withdrawal” in the original section of the class and an “Incomplete” on your record in the extension section. The I will be replaced by the letter grade once you complete the course, but the W stays on your transcript.

Petitions for Additional Time

If you do not complete a class before your extension expires due to unavoidable, extenuating circumstances, you may file a petition for additional time to complete the class and you must furnish documentation demonstrating your need for additional time. The petition committee uses the same standards for granting and denying petitions as the main campus.

Online Credit Tuition Rates

Online Credit tuition is assessed at a per-credit hour rate in addition to any tuition paid on campus. A single rate is charged regardless of a student’s in-state or out-of-state classification.

Be Boulder Anywhere (BBA) courses have their own tuition rates.

Tuition Policy

You will be billed for your Continuing Education registration. Bills are available through MyCUInfo. A 1% service charge is added to an unpaid balance after the tuition due date, and a financial stop is placed on your student record. All tuition and refund determinations are subject to audit.

  • Evening, Online, and Applied Music tuition is charged in addition to ACCESS rates when enrolled in both programs concurrently.

Discounts

CU Employee Discounts

University of Colorado faculty, staff, professional researchers, and retirees from any of the CU campuses, including the CU System, are eligible for the following program discounts:

• The International English Center offers a 25% discount.
• The Evening Credit program offers a 50% discount.
• Applied Music and Online Credit programs offer a 20% discount on all courses with the exception of term-based WRTG courses.

Please note that faculty, staff, and professional researchers must be at least half-time and need to provide a printed copy of their “job list” from Peoplesoft or some equivalent form of documentation when requesting a discount.

Alumni Discounts

Alumni Association members receive a 10% discount off in-state tuition for one Continuing Education courses. For more information call 303-492-5148.

Offered in partnership with the University of Colorado’s Alumni Association. Members of the HERD and “New Graduate Members” are not eligible for this discount.

Other Discounts

The International English Center offers a 25% discount for the spouses and children of current degree-seeking students.

Science Discovery offers a 10% discount to the children of CU faculty, staff, and students.

Student Fees

ACCESS and Summer Session

Any student enrolled in the ACCESS program or Summer Session as a nondegree student will be assessed full mandatory fees per the campus fee schedule. These fees give students access to the RTD bus system and other campus services.

Evening and Online Credit

Denver-metro area Continuing Education students who are enrolled in Evening or Online Credit courses may elect to purchase an optional student fee packages to obtain additional resources. Main campus students who enroll in Evening and Online Credit courses do not need to opt in or pay additional fees.

In addition, students must also purchase a BuffOne ID card. BuffOne cards can be purchased for $30 in room N180 of the Center for Community (C4C), just east of Regent Hall. Fees for Fall 2016

The 2016-2017 cost is $478.68 per semester and includes the Student Activity Fee, an RTD bus pass, and access to the Student Recreation Center. Students can elect to pay an additional $28.50 to support intercollegiate athletics.

Financial aid for self-paced courses

Students may receive financial aid for self-paced courses, with the following restrictions:

  • For an Independent Learning course to count toward a student’s enrollment status for a semester, the course must be added prior to the add/drop deadline of that semester, based on main campus census dates.
  • Students who receive aid for a self-paced course and drop the course after the census date will receive a “Withdrawn” for that course, even if it is within the 40 days we allow for a drop.
  • Students who do not complete the course within six months and choose to extend will have a double impact to their financial aid eligibility. Both the “Withdrawn” designation and the “Incomplete” designation count against a student’s completion rate.

Nontraditional Student Scholarship

Continuing Education offers a Nontraditional Student Scholarship each semester. The maximum award for this scholarship is 80% of the resident rate of one three-credit course with a maximum of $850. The award amount is based on available funding and a competitive essay review. The Fall 2016 application deadline is September 8, 2016.

Eligible students must be:

  1. Nondegree seeking (not formally admitted to a CU degree program)
  2. Enrolled in courses offered via ACCESS, Boulder Evening Credit, Online Credit, the International English Center, or Applied Music.

Application and Award Process

  • Along with the application, include a typewritten essay of at least 250 words addressing your past educational history; your future goals; and the way in which the scholarship will assist you in meeting those goals.
  • Awardees will be notified via the email given on the application.

State Authorization Regarding Online and Distance Education

Prospective and Current Students: The following information explains the University of Colorado Boulder’s status with regard to offering online education to students living outside of Colorado. As of September 1, 2016, students living in any state may now enroll in all online courses, programs, certificates or degrees offered by the University of Colorado Boulder. See below for more information and for any possible restrictions you might encounter.

Additional Information About CU Boulder’s Status Regarding Authorizations in Other States
In February 2015, CU Boulder became a participant in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) initiative. Operating under NC-SARA allows CU Boulder to offer online education to students living in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

CU Boulder may also enroll students living in California, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky*, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

*Other Restrictions on Enrollment and Activity: Kentucky
Prospective and current students cannot enroll in or satisfy any component in a course, program, certificate, or degree that requires them to participate in an internship, field experience, or any activity that would physically occur on-the-ground in Kentucky. We will update this web site as soon as we become aware of changes in this restriction.

Prospective and current students interested in courses, programs, certificates, or degrees that lead to professional licensure must understand their state licensing board’s requirements prior to enrolling.
